.: Thermal Runaway
The following is an example of thermal runaway using the Ductshow© software.
There are 10 circuits in this example. Each circuit is 10 -4" PVC 40 with 3-600kCMIL copper conductors. there is only 185 amps per conductor. the earth temp is 20C and the RHO is 90 load factor for this example is 90% and the top duct is -24"
NOTE: Normal current carrying capacity of 600kCMIL Cu. per NEC 310.16 @ 75C is 420 Amps
All temperatures are shown in C.
The Time is shown on the bottom right in hours. As the conductors begin to heat the resistance begins to rise. This added resistance creates even more heat and resistance and you get a thermal runaway condition.

.: Professional Engineering
Neher-McGrath are specialized and complicated calculations. We highly suggest that all results and calculation be made under the guidance of and licence professional engineer that specializes in this type of work.
NEC 310.15 (C) Engineering Supervision, indicates that these calculations should be performed under engineering supervision.
.: Software:
There are several software packages available that will calculate the Neher-McGrath equations. Each of these packages has its pros and cons. Please feel free to email us with your particular project requirements and we can help you find the software package that best suits your needs. Email Us
